Unfortunately, faking caller ID information is a trick that scammers have had up their sleeves for a while. Scammers use spoofing tools that trick your caller ID into displaying a different name in order to illegally obtain money from their victims.
In the case of this recent caller ID scam, scammers posed as the local sheriff's department in order to falsely accuse victims of missing jury duty. The scammers then ordered their victims to pay court fees in the form of iTunes gift cards. These payments amounted to more than $2,000.
If you encounter a scam like this, always keep in mind that police will never ask for payments over the phone and report the incident to your local authorities right away.
