Game of Thrones Phishing Scam

By Scam Awareness | August 19, 2016

Can't get enough of Game of Thrones? You aren't alone! Scammers know how popular the show is and are now targeting its fans. According to Consumerist, scammers are sending phishing emails to a wide variety of individuals, hoping to find fans who may want to watch the show for free.

Consumerist reports that the scammer's phishing email, "gives the recipient the bad news that 'We have received information leading us to believe that an individual has utilized the IP address... at the noted data and time below to host and/or facilitate the downloading and/or streaming of content... in which Home Box Office, Inc. is the copyright owner.'" The scammer then tells fans that they have 3 days to pay or they will be subject to "legal action."

TorrentFreak, a file-sharing blog, confirmed with the agency HBO works with to send out copyright notices that these emails are a scam. HBO has also been alerted of the scam.

Be sure to catch up on your favorite shows on their official sites like hbogo.com and hbonow.com and as always, stay safe!
