Home Scams

By Scam Awareness | November 4, 2016

The weather is getting colder, the nights are getting longer and many homeowners are planning to make some home repairs before winter sets in. Unfortunately, scammers try to take advantage of the season by tricking residents with home improvement scams.

Here are some tips from the BBB and The Spokesman-Review to stay safe this fall:

  • Get a referral! Check with friends, family or a neighbor to see if they can recommend a company or contactor in your area.

  • Ask for written estimates before signing an agreement. Compare a few businesses in your area to see what the average cost will be. Unsure of where to start? Check out BBB's Request A Quote program to get quotes from businesses around you.

  • Do you research! Check to make sure the business is accredited and has all the right credentials before making your decision.

  • Be sure to read the whole contract! Check for hidden fees or additional expenses to make sure you stay on budget.

Stay safe!
