The June Red Flag Winner goes to... Operation Tech Trap! The FTC launched the program alongside partners at the federal, state and international levels to crackdown on cybercrime, particularly fake tech support scams.
The FTC and its partners announced 16 new actions against deceptive tech support operations, including complaints, settlements, indictments and guilty pleas. In just four of the recently announced Operation Tech Trap cases, the FTC and the State Attorneys General of Florida, Alabama and Ohio allege that defendants used methods to scam consumers out of millions of dollars.
Scammers run ads that resemble pop-up security alerts, warning consumers that their computers are infected with viruses or are being hacked. Users are directed to call their computer company at a toll-free number, where operators trick them into paying a hefty fee for unnecessary repairs.
