Surprisingly, we have not yet turned the page on one of the oldest scams in the book: the magazine subscription scam! What starts out as an innocent call from what you think is a reputable magazine subscription service could result in a tiresome and costly scam.
Each year, these fast-talking scam artists prey on victims by asking for sensitive financial information over the phone. The scammers then take your personal information and-without your knowledge-lock you into long-term magazine subscriptions that can cost you hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars.
Because the process to unsubscribe is intentionally difficult, you might be left paying for these subscriptions. Even worse, you could be accumulating debt without realizing it; many victims of this scam don't realize it until they are confronted by debt collectors.
Take note and never give out your credit card information over the phone to an unverified caller. Additionally, if you experience this scam, follow the Federal Trade Commission's guidance on debt collectors. When dealing with debt collection, you should file a complaint with your state's attorney general. Subscribe to this advice in order to avoid or minimize the effects of magazine subscription scams!
