February 2017 Red Flag Winner

By Scam Awareness | February 28, 2017

The February Red Flag Award Winner goes to... Suffolk County Police Department! The New York-based law enforcement agency devotes a section on its website to scam alerts and resources for Suffolk County residents, including alerts about financial scams. For example, they recently warned of a lottery scam targeting Hispanic females, and a scammer soliciting cash deposits for tree trimming services. They provide external links to a 'Wall of Shame Registry,' which lists scammers who have broken the law, scam help centers and forms to report a scam. Suffolk County Police Department also maintains a list of current scams in the area to equip Suffolk County residents with the information they need to protect themselves against fraud. Additionally, the Police Department runs a Twitter account that habitually alerts its followers of new, local scams, including a recent lottery scam and tree trimming scam.
